Mama Cash is thrilled to announce its fourth-year partnership with the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), the world’s largest documentary film festival. The 2023 festival runs from 8 – 19 November; 12 days of events where audiences and film professionals will immerse themselves in a diverse programme of the latest documentary films, interactive projects, exhibitions, performances, post-screening talks and workshops.
For the 36th edition of IDFA, Mama Cash is facilitating a screening of the critically acclaimed documentary: “Our Land, Our Freedom” by film makers Meena Nanji & Zippy Kimundu. This film captures issues and topics that Mama Cash is working on, such as land and decolonial justice, human rights and self-led feminist activism. A painful yet hopeful story where two narratives are tied together to show how structural change requires structural fight.
“Mama Cash partnered with IDFA because of the organisation’s long-standing history of supporting feminist artists and critical art. The documentary’s compelling storytelling strongly aligns with our dedication to supporting land defenders, particularly women, girls, and trans and intersex individuals who are safeguarding ancestral lands, waters, and territories. It serves as a poignant homage to the unwavering spirit of resilience, the quest for truth, and the struggle for justice,” says Saranel Benjamin, Mama Cash’s Co- Executive Director.
FILM: “Our Land Our Freedom” 2023 – Meena Nanji, Zippy Kimundu
A Kenyan woman’s search for her father’s remains becomes an investigation into British colonial atrocities including concentration camps and land theft that left hundreds of thousands of Kenyans destitute. As her mission expands, she transforms into a powerful advocate championing justice and land resettlement for those dispossessed.
The event is not just an opportunity to witness a powerful story but also to engage in a meaningful conversation during the Q&A session that follows moderated by Yara Yuri Safadi.
