Mama Cash supports women, girls, and trans and intersex people in their fight for their rights. We back activists who courageously are making their voices heard, are criticising oppressive or restrictive norms and practices, and are lobbying for just laws. We champion the feminists demanding their political, economic, cultural, social, and civil rights, and insisting on bodily autonomy. Together, with activists and donors, we’re working towards a more just world for women, girls, and trans and intersex people.
Mama Cash processes your data so that we can provide you as a donor, supporter, grantee partner, or grant applicant with good service and to inform you about our work and campaigns. Mama Cash takes your privacy very seriously; we take great care in protecting your data and do so in compliance with the current (privacy) legal framework.
In this privacy statement, we would like to inform you of what data we hold about you and why we need it to be of service to you. Please find the information below about what you can expect from us, and what rules we comply with.
Applicability
This privacy statement applies to the processing of personal data by Mama Cash via our website and other channels. Mama Cash has its registered office at Eerste Helmersstraat 17 D, 1054CX Amsterdam and is registered in the commercial and trade register of the Chamber of Commerce under number 41202535.
This privacy statement is applicable to all processing of personal data by Mama Cash. This means this privacy statement covers the processing of personal data of donors, associates, and volunteers, as well as the data that is obtained from visiting Mama Cash’s website.
This statement does not apply to websites or activities of other organisations to which Mama Cash refers. These organisations implement their own privacy policy, which you yourself can take note of.
Data processing
Mama Cash works to ensure that feminist collective action led by women, girls, and trans and intersex people is resourced, supported, and connected within and across social movements. Through our collaboration with donors, we move more and better money to movements. Mama Cash is a foundation that is completely dependent for its income on donations from institutional donors and private individuals, inheritances, and fundraising.
We therefore process personal data out of necessity for the performance of a contract, to comply with a legal obligation, because you consented to it, or out of necessity for the purposes of the legitimate interests pursued by Mama Cash. This means we process personal data online via our website when you register to donate, when you include Mama Cash in your inheritance, when you agree to volunteer or to join an event, when you sign up for one of our email newsletters, when you apply for a grant using our Letter of Interest form, or when you take part in an online campaign. For these purposes, we could also process your data offline, when you register via canvassers, a registration form, or by phone.
To these ends, your data will be processed to manage your donation, to communicate with you, to put you on an attendance list, for the purposes of our donor records system, or for our grantmaking programme. Moreover, we may provide you with information about our work and campaigns. If required, we will always ask your consent for marketing and/or fundraising purposes.
Data processed by Mama Cash
Mama Cash processes various categories of personal data to achieve its objectives and inform its relations. The most important categories are:
- Contact details, such as name, address, place of residence, telephone number, and e-mail address. These are used to inform grantee-partners, donors and relations about actions, campaigns, and achieved results, and for marketing purposes.
- Personal characteristics, such as gender and age, which can be used for targeted communication and analyses.
- Financial data, such as bank account numbers and transaction data, which are necessary for processing donations.
- Data about participation and interests, such as participation in campaigns, events, or networks, and specific interests or preferences. This information helps Mama Cash to increase involvement and provide targeted information.
- Visual material, such as photos and videos taken during events or manifestations, which are used for reporting, PR, and information purposes.
- Online data: Mama Cash collects data about the use of its website and web shop, such as IP addresses, browser type, pages visited, and click behaviour. In addition, Mama Cash records whether a user has given permission for marketing communication (marketing opt-in). This data helps to analyse and improve the user experience and security.
- Other data: Mama Cash may process additional information such as contact history, agreements made, and notes about the nature of the relationship. This may occur in the context of donor relationships, collaborations, or the handling of complaints.
Without consent of a parent or legal guardian, we do not process any personal data of minors.
Grants
Mama Cash puts resources in the hands of activists building their own movements for justice. We support individuals, groups, and movements who speak and act for themselves based on their lived experiences of stigma, violence, exploitation, and exclusion. We accompany grantee-partners with financial and non-financial resources.
At the centre of our participatory grantmaking system is the Global Advisory Network (GAN). The GAN is populated by feminist activists based in different geographic areas, from different constituencies, with diverse thematic expertise, experience, and connections. Advisors serve on the various bodies that make decisions for four of Mama Cash’s five funds:
- the Resilience Fund;
- the Revolution Fund;
- the Radical Love Fund;
- the Spark Fund; and
- the Solidarity Fund
The personal data that Mama Cash processes for handling grant applications and making grants are as follows: name, gender, email address, the address of your organisation, and the phone number of organisations and/or employees or endorsers. We use this information to process your grant application, and if your grant is approved, to keep in touch with you during the term of the grant.
In order to evaluate our grantmaking programme, we also occasionally work with external parties. For this purpose, we share your name, email address, organisation, and region. In all cases we verify whether these third parties have adequate safeguards in place in the area of privacy and security.
We provide long-term support, which can be up to ten (10) years. Additionally, we monitor the progress of the multiple grants over a longer period of time; for instance, ten years in a row. Therefore, we retain organisation data after the last activity for a fund
Data transfer to third parties
We work with external parties for hosting, database, and maintenance. These parties may have access to your data as part of the work they carry out for Mama Cash. All data is hosted in Europe. We may also work with parties who process personal data on our behalf, for instance, marketing firms or firms whose software we use. If we transfer your personal data to a third party, we will verify the organisation, and we will make appropriate contractual agreements. Some of these parties may be located outside Europe. In all cases, we ensure that these third parties have adequate safeguards in place in the area of privacy and security.
Contact with donors
If you register as a Mama Cash donor, we record the personal data you provide in our donor records system. Some new donors receive a welcome message from Mama Cash by post or via email confirming the donation. Mama Cash informs its donors about its campaigns via our newsletter, by email, post and/or telephone.
Our records system also contains personal details of our contacts. A contact is someone who is known to Mama Cash (for example, because they have taken part in a campaign, subscribed to a newsletter, or requested information), but is not a donor.
There are various places on our website (www.mamacash.org) where you can subscribe to our digital newsletters. To subscribe, we need to process your email address. If you, as a participant in a campaign, donor, or information requester, have provided your email address to Mama Cash, you will be informed by email about our campaigns and other activities. Post
If you register as a donor, Mama Cash will send you a conformation by post or email. We may also keep you informed about our work or request your contribution. If you no longer wish to receive any post from us, please inform us via the contact details at the end of this statement.
Your rights
Accessing, changing, or deleting data
You have the right to ask questions about or request access to the data we gather about you. You also have the right to submit a request to change the data we process. Moreover, you can ask us to delete your data (the right to be forgotten). If you wish to do so, contact us via the contact details at the end of this statement. Please mention your full name, address, phone number, and email address.
We can only process your access request directly if your request contains sufficient correct information. Mama Cash is required to verify your identity before we can give you access to personal data. If your request is incomplete, we will ask you for additional information for verification purposes. Some data cannot be deleted immediately by Mama Cash. For example, in the case of a financial relationship (donation) or due to the tax retention obligation of seven years
Portability
You also have the right to receive the information we gather in a technical format, such as a digital file. If you wish to do so, contact us via the contact details at the end of this statement. Please mention your full name, address, phone number, and email address in this request as well.
Withdraw consent
If you’ve given us your consent for certain processing activities – for instance, if you subscribed to our newsletter – you can withdraw your consent at any time. You can do so by reaching out to us via the contact details at the end of this statement.
How long do we keep your data?
We may be required to keep data for a certain period of time out of necessity due to a legal and/or tax obligation. We may also archive data if it is required at a later time. However, in principle your personal data will not be kept longer than necessary.
Security
Mama Cash has put in place appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure the security of the systems in which personal data are stored and to protect personal data against loss or any form of unlawful processing. Personal data are only accessible to employees who are authorised based on their job responsibilities. We only use personal data for the purposes for which they were collected, that is, for compatible purposes.
Our entire website, including our donation page, therefore also secures data by using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). This is a protocol that guarantees secure communication over the internet and that is designed to prevent eavesdropping, interference, or falsification of messages. If you are on a secure page, such as our donation form, then your browser will notify you that you are on a safe site.
Mama Cash uses SSL to protect sensitive information online and protect user information offline. Access to all your data, not only sensitive information such as payment details, is restricted. Only employees who need the information to perform a certain task have access to it.
Cookies
Mama Cash uses cookies to improve the usability of our website and to collect anonymised data, such as the date and time of your visit and the pages you viewed. Mama Cash uses this data to improve the website, compile traffic statistics, and assess the popularity of different sections of the website. Questions or complaints
As a donor, recipient of our newsletter or digital newsletter, or as a grant applicant or recipient, you acknowledge and accept this privacy statement and give Mama Cash your consent to collect, store, and process your personal information as described above and for the purposes you have agreed to.
