Mama Cash has always been a trailblazer. Since 1983, we have funded movements that tackle the interconnectedness of all injustices. They know that rights aren’t passively requested – they’re actively fought for. Today, we’re proud to support the numerous feminist movements that are unstoppable forces of change, and that are pushing fearlessly for a world where women, girls, and trans and intersex people can live freely and boldly.
In celebration of our 40th anniversary, we commissioned an Impact Study: ‘Change that Lasts: 40 Years of Impact’, which reveals how our funding has driven key advancements by these movements over the past 40 years.
40 YEARS OF FEARLESS AMBITION
Despite global violence, inequality and injustice; despite facing atrocity and climate disaster in all corners of the globe; despite a surge in far-right thinking that threatens all previous progress; feminist movements just keep going. Their relentless efforts have not only broken barriers but also illuminated the path for future generations, proving time and again that feminist activism does reshape our world
40 YEARS OF PIONEERING PROGRESS
‘People see us, people hear us now’ – Stella Nkhonya, Malawi Human Rights for Women and Girls with Disabilities (MHRWD), Malawi
Feminist movements have influenced laws, policies, and societal and cultural norms worldwide. In Argentina, they paved the way for the landmark legalisation of abortion. In India, they created safe spaces for LBTQ communities, fostering social acceptance and legal protection. In Malawi, they championed the new Persons with Disabilities Act, ensuring the oversight council includes a person with a disability. In Turkey, they pushed for alignment with the Istanbul Convention on gender-based violence despite the country’s withdrawal from that convention. And in the Netherlands, their efforts led to the world’s first legalisation of same-sex marriage.
40 YEARS OF COLLECTIVE ACTION
Thanks to thousands of donors, we’ve grown from a €1.2 million inheritance to €140 million invested in the rights of women, girls, and trans and intersex people around the world. This journey testifies to the power of collective action and the enduring strength of feminist values.
CHANGE THAT LASTS
As we enter a new chapter, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to feminist principles and the movements that drive social change and liberation. We will continue to challenge injustice and work towards a more equitable future. Let’s stay in movement together and make the next 40 years even more transformative!
