S.P.E.A.K.:  for self-determination of Muslim women

Muslim women are increasingly confronted with Islamophobia, racism, and exclusion, especially in public debate and policy. At a time when our bodies and clothing are being politicised, S.P.E.A.K. offers a platform for self-representation and resistance to stereotyping.

We fight for the right of self-determination and highlight how different forms of oppression meet.

In this way, we complement the dominant, often limited feminist discourse with an intersectional perspective.

Powerful

We resist the stereotypical image that Muslim women are oppressed, passive, or all the same. We show that they are powerful, diverse, and self-aware.

We also break through the idea that feminism and Islam are incompatible, and that the headscarf is always a sign of oppression.

Instead, we emphasise freedom of choice, self-determination, and autonomy. We do this by raising awareness about islamophobia, organising talks, and taking to the streets to claim our rights.

Room for growth

The Spark Fund has helped us to work more independently and effectively. It gives us the financial space to grow, increase our visibility, and set up our own projects without compromising our principles. This allows us to make more of an impact and pursue structural change from within our own community.  Our autonomy is very important to us.
