Across the globe, feminist movements and activists are doing the care work that holds our world together. But as governments privatise care and underfund public systems, it is mainly women, girls, and trans and intersex caregivers that are left undervalued and under-resourced. They face a ‘double depletion’: rising care demands alongside their own unmet care needs.
Drawing on insights from 12 Mama Cash grantee-partners (representing an intersection of identities), our latest Care Justice report shows how women caregivers are filling widening gaps and building networks in the midst of current crises such as climate change, the anti-gender backlash, and shrinking civic spaces. It outlines the many forms of care labour, how political neglect deepens care inequalities, and what movements and activists need to continue their vital care work.
