The Revolution Fund

The Revolution Fund is Mama Cash’s new participatory grantmaking fund that enables us to respond to urgent, timely and important funding requests that create an opportunity for change, enable a reaction to an urgent need, and/or seed a new project or idea, but fall outside of our other regular grantmaking criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Revolution Fund different from Mama Cash’s other Funds?

The Revolution Fund accepts nominations for proposals for small one-time grants that last no longer than a year. Applications will be accepted if they respond to or create an opportunity for change, enable a reaction to an urgent need, and/or seed a new project or idea. Revolution Fund grants will also go to groups or initiatives that demonstrate solidarity for a cause or special initiative that reflects Mama Cash’s institutional vision, mission and values, but fall outside of our other regular grantmaking criteria.

Who Can Apply?

Any group or initiative based anywhere in the world can apply for a Revolution Fund grant as long as they receive a nomination from a current Mama Cash staff member, Board member or Advisor.

What are the Eligibility Criteria for a Revolution Fund grant?

Revolution Fund grants will support groups and initiatives that:

  • Receive a nomination from a current Mama Cash staff member, Board member or Advisor.
  • Work from a feminist and/or women's, girls, trans or intersex people’s rights perspective;
  • Are self-led by the women, girls, trans people and/or intersex people they serve;
  • Seek to create an opportunity for change, enable a reaction to an urgent need, and/or seed a new project or idea;
  • Reflect our institutional vision, mission and values but fall outside of our existing grantmaking criteria.

What does the Revolution Fund not fund?

Revolution Fund grants will not support groups and initiatives that:

  • Are individually led;
  • Are businesses or for-profit projects;
  • Could otherwise qualify for any of our grantmaking funds (ie. Resilience Fund, Spark Fund, Solidarity Fund and/or Radical Love Fund);
  • Are based in the Global North that are executing programmes in or are leading partnerships with groups based in the Global South and East;
  • Are founded by, led by, or structurally or economically dependent on political parties, government agencies, or religious institutions;
  • Include activities that seek to deny the rights of certain women, girls, trans and intersex people, based on who they are, the work they do or on their position in society.

How Do I Receive a Nomination?

In order to apply for a Revolution Fund grant you will need to contact and receive a nomination from a current Mama Cash staff member, Board member or Advisor. They will submit the application on your behalf via an online application form.

How Will Decisions Be Made?

Revolution Fund proposals will go through a three-step evaluation process:

  1. 1- All groups and initiatives must receive a nomination from a current Mama Cash staff member, Board member or Advisor.
  2. 2- Mama Cash staff will screen all nominations to ensure they meet our eligibility criteria.
  3. 3- All eligible applications will be evaluated by a panel of members of our external advisory network via a participatory grantmaking approach. The panel will make the final decision on the grant and budget.

When can I Apply for a Revolution Fund Grant?
