Closing space for feminist activism

In contexts around the world, political and social landscapes are becoming increasingly repressive. We see that societies with restricted civic space actively promote patriarchal values and traditional gender identities, yet attention to the phenomenon of "closing space" has not consistently incorporated a gendered lens. In our work with feminist activists, we hear clearly that closing space is a gendered phenomenon. The experiences of exclusion and repression that women, girls, trans and intersex people have always experienced are heightened in current context. But experiences of repression also build their political analysis and savvy and equip them to resist.
