Understanding the effects of trade policy and globalization on women

International Gender and Trade Network

More than 100 representatives from women's rights groups, government, business and universities are gathering in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to attend workshops on gender, trade and women's rights.

Women in an illegal sewing factory The organiser of the series, Mama Cash grantee the International Gender and Trade Network (IGTN) Central Asia, wants more women to understand and be able to shape the effects of trade policy, globalization and liberalization on women.

The rapid transition to free market economies in former Soviet countries is leaving societies grappling with the impact of trade liberalization on social policy, gender equality and human rights. The often unpaid care work women do is ignored in trade policy and trade negotiations while it is essential for the cash economy. Attention to the economic rights of women within free market economies is practically absent within regional women's movements.

The IGTN workshops are providing women in visible and leadership positions with critical information and an opportunity to strategize together at a crucial time. Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan all aspire to World Trade Organisation membership. The workshops give the participants a chance to anticipate the consequences that may have for women.

By supporting IGTN Central Asia, Mama Cash is contributing to an emerging regional feminist network with great potential. IGTN is enriching the public debate about economic issues with a feminist perspective and stimulating cooperation between women's groups, government, business and universities in the region.

IGTN has already reached groups from four Central Asian countries and is attracting interest from neighbouring countries like Azerbaijan and Russia.
